- May 9th, 2009- Ruben had an accident with a company vehicle and incurred damages causing a small claims suit.
- April 10, 2010- Nearly a year later, Ruben had a more serious accident with injuries in which there's an open lawsuit still in progress.
- Sometime in between or during all these, there was the accident that completely totaled his truck out.
- September 2010- Ruben failed to make a fire district meeting because of, yes, you guessed it , ANOTHER vehicle accident! We only know this because he informed the board of the reason of his absence. It wasn't reported publicly.
- January 30. 2011- Ruben killed a bicyclist on Whitfield, not too far from his home. Charges are pending against Ruben according to the FHP. And family & friends are grieving an untimely loss that most likely could have been prevented.
"Misappropriation: That's a big word for misusing things or funds that aren't a persons. When someone is in a public office or position it's important to remember that what you have is provided by the taxpayers and you must remain above reproach. It's always good to be held accountable but often times from the inside looking further in, if you're not in the management end of things, you really don't understand the big picture."
I further explained the reasons for my comments about this misappropriation thought and how it applied to Commissioner Mark Ruben in particular, i.e. the birthday party at the firehouse for his child (which would obviously would have fully impeded the function of that house that day), the use of the fire department credit card by a deputy chief for Mark Ruben's child's birthday cake, and making promises to that same deputy chief that he'll make him the next chief (which he has already foolishly publicly attempted to fulfill that promise during the December Fire Meeting). However these pale in comparison to what would be the precursor to this tragedy on Sunday afternoon, January 30th, 2011 when Sondra Thompson lost her life bicycling near her home because Mark Ruben was on the same road as her.
It was so noted in that same blog on OCTOBER 27th that Commissioner Ruben had totally wrecked his truck in a one man accident (with a fire hydrant no less), and instead of waiting on the proper authorities, he called a friend in the fire department. Guess who? Deputy Chief Tim Berry, yes, the same aforementioned Deputy Chief involved with the credit card & birthday cake that he'd promised to make chief and whom he fought openly to make the chief immediately upon Chief Gover's resignation, and who did come pick him up, leaving his totaled truck at the scene where he later called the accident in. All this occurred several hours later - just how convenient is that if alcohol might be involved?
And now a 66 year old woman is dead from riding her bike in the vicinity of Commissioner Ruben who hit her hard enough from behind to kill her even whilst she was wearing a helmet. The Sarasota Herald Tribune reported it more clearly explaining how Ms. Thompson was struck: MANATEE COUNTY - A 66-year-old woman was killed Sunday afternoon after she was reportedly hit while riding her bicycle. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mark D. Ruben, 44, of Sarasota was driving west on Whitfield Avenue, near Treymore Court at about 1:45 p.m. Sondra L. Thompson, of University Park, was in the bicycle lane, when the right front of Ruben's 2009 Chevy pickup struck her from behind, the FHP reported. Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene. Ruben was uninjured. Charges are pending as the case is still being investigated.... Sondra Thompson died instantly. Even with a helmet on to protect her head, on a road where the speed limit is 30mph and while she is riding in a bike lane. Did Mark Ruben take a breathalyzer test at the scene? Or did the officer assume due to the midday hour, and the fact that he didn't appear under the influence of anything, that he couldn't have been? Is it because Mark Ruben is a political official that he can insinuate that an experienced biker with an expensive bike wearing safety gear including her helmet managed to leave her bike lane and swerve into his path that he created the reasonable doubt necessary to once again escape the justice he fully deserves? Dead men tell no tales... do they? Who's his witness? She's gone.
Commissioner Mark Ruben |
This week a funeral is being planned for a woman who by all accounts from today's article in the Bradenton Herald (see my post showing it) was a "wonderful" person as an avid, SAFE biker, a former teacher, a gifted musician and a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law. This lady will truly be missed as it's apparent she was a blessing to her familyand her community. My deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends and community.

I suggest you get all your facts straight on the accident that Mark Ruben was involved with. This was an accident that two families have to deal with. Obviousely your anger is towards Southern Manatee fire department. Please don't use this tragic accident for your blog againist the SMFD. Your information is not correct.
ReplyDeleteYou have so many facts wrong in your post. Mark Ruben never had a birthday party for his soon at the fire house. Chief Tom Hennessey donated at a auction for a school fundraiser, a childs birthday party to be given at a firehouse. Their is a certificate naming the child who won the auction with Chief Tom Hennessy signature on it. Please correct this on your post. Another correction you need to make was when Mark Ruben totaled his car, Chief Tom Hennessy whose name is on the report, was the one who was called to the scene and who went with Mark Ruben to the hospital. The reason for posting this is not saying Tom Hen nnessey did anything wrong. I personally think he was a great fire chief. He was very generous to donate a birthday party for a child, for a school fund raiser, and did nothing wrong for going to an accident to be their for a fire commissioner who had a car accident. With your wrong information that Tim Berry gave the birthday party in hopes he would be the next fire chief, and Mark Ruben called Tim Berry when he was in a car accident is completely false. Posting wrong information about these two facts makes people wonder what other wrong information are you posting about Mark Ruben and other firefighter you talk bad about. State only the facts and people might take you more serious.Lets see if you post this to your blog.
ReplyDeleteThere is no proof that Mr. Ruben or Sondra Thompson was negligent in the accident that caused Sondra Thompson's death. There are facts in Mr. Ruben's history however, that suggest that he was probably at fault and he is damn lucky there were no witnesses. Sondra was a careful woman, careful about everything, and probably careful about where she was riding in the bike lane on that day. Mr. Ruben has already demonstrated that he is an irresponsible adult with a history of lousy driving. He most likely was responsible for the death of a wonderful lady who deserved better than she got. Ruben will get his eventually because idiots like him never learn anything, even from the most horrendous catastrophes they are responsible for. It isn't proper to wish him harm, but I do hope he suffers some consequence for his irresponsible actions on that fateful day that Sondra died
ReplyDeleteHello, there were 2 witnesses on motorcycles...me being one of the them. Get your facts straight before you comment.
DeleteI commented over a year ago in January 2011...Where have you been all this time?
DeleteYou could have set me straight back then when everyone was wondering and the FHP was diligently investigating this nightmare and didn't come out with their charges til MAY!
Obviously you helped make it all right.
I finally posted Anonymous above because he stated himself calmly but as he claims I have my facts messed up so does he... but I will address my findings AND retract my mistatements in my posts so that I am accurate in my postings. Thus I will hold myself to the higher standard of integrity that John 8:32 has repeatedly refused to do so all along. I am not afraid of the truth because I abide in Him. I do not want to say the wrong thing and only wish to inform readers of this district of the facts they need to know in order to make sound voting decisions. Watch for the next blog!
ReplyDeleteActually cdeal, there are some things we don't know about the accident... so I'm waiting for the investigation results. I am trusting the process at this point.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why charges are pending is because their was two witnesses that said Mark Ruben was driving in his lane and was not swaying. The paper doesn't mention that, but the facts will all come out in the end. The paper also mentions he was leaving his home which is untrue,he was seeing his children at their home and left their heading to his home which is not in Palm Aire. So don't believe everything you read. I could be wrong on some of my information, but I think my source is reliable. Thanks for posting
ReplyDeleteAnother reasonable post with respect made anonymously but nonetheless respectfully, thank you...
ReplyDeletehowever, I too have been informed of some of what you say and your story now has more witnesses than what I was told... so now I'm inclined not to believe what I'm hearing more than what I'm reading from the FHP. As I said, this is an investigation in progress and I am trusting the process with the FHP as they are quite thorough and don't quit. It's best not to try it in public either. The facts that Commissioner Ruben must live with are glaring enough. It may take months but it will be properly charged.
What has been determined by the FHP investigation? Tire marks on the road should tell the tale. What does the accident report say? Prior history- improper lane change causing crash '08, civil action for auto negligence resulting in property damages and injuries, '09, citation from FHP for careless driving resulting in crash '10 and now overtaking and passing a vehicle/CUTTING IN resulting in a fatality. Sondra Thompson deserves justice in this case.
ReplyDeleteNo Justice was served. He got away with it again.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous Jan 19, You are right. This BUM has more lives then a cat. He should be in Jail, off the streets. I hope that the family he screwed, get some Justice.
DeleteUnfortunately justice was not served in Sondra Thompson's case... Ruben got a slap on the wrist. May all of us and our loved ones never be in his path.
ReplyDeleteHeard he was arrested yesterday! For a different crime!
ReplyDeleteWill is this the guy, that the Union 2546 put into office? If you go to the webb "ManateeSheriff.com" go to "Arrest Inquiry" Name,Mark Ruben - Booking Number# 2012001097 This will tell you the Facts.
DeleteThe next time firefighters come to my front door to tell me who to vote for,I will shut the door on them...
Willis, you should have waited on the above addition to this blog.
ReplyDeleteWait for what? More people to get hurt?
DeleteOne down, Two to go.
He has been arrested on child sexual battery.
ReplyDeleteI don't live in the area any longer...but, have seen how things "work" and we all no how nasty divorces and people can be. Let's not forget that these a unrelated "charges". The facts will support the end result. Try to not judge Mark Ruben befoe we know all there is to know. And, remember that he is a Father, son, and friend to many. Mr. Ruben deserves the benefit of doubt no matter what you might feel about Manatee goverment or Politics. And, I also question who you are to judge a persons marriage or finances...a train wreck ? interesting..
DeleteScubagirl, have you read the charges in detail? The charges are explicit and extremely serious and have been long suffering by the children he is a father to! These kind of charges are not brought about lightly nor do they come out of a "divorce" (from which by all accounts I've heard, is for the most part amicable as they are still very good friends.) So please, do not try to convince me that Mark Ruben is not a "train wreck"... it's not a matter of judgment. It's simply an observation ANYONE who's looking at this man's life AND the life he cost a year ago, the multiple incidents in his vehicle, his private issues known to his friends and family, and now this? What ISN'T a "train wreck" about a life that could have been properly enjoying a pension about to be earned in his job in a couple of years, enjoying his political career he'd worked so hard to get with so much union and firefighter support and his family he's losing because of his problems! If that's not derailment (a "train wreck") of a life (and one heck of a wake up call) then I don't know what is!
ReplyDeleteDebbie Willis,
DeleteI would like to start by saying, although public record...please remove his current address at the top of your BLOG site! I am only going to ask once. furthermore, I would like to ask you a question, why is the wife still married to Ruben. I often wonder
Look now, it's corrected... feel better? And don't threaten me again- either publicly OR privately! EVER.
DeleteTo answer your second question though... are you sure they're married? According to Sarasota County's records, they divorced in 1991, and there's no records in either Sarasota or Manatee of a marriage again since then. Of course they could have but still, the only thing I see is that they didn't.
And the PUBLIC records will show that he lived in one address (YOURS that you had me remove above) and she lived in another. So my impression is they are good friends. Any more info than that is personal and should be left to them, sort of irrelevant isn't it anyhow? Being married, being a father, being anything doesn't take away from any crime. Crimes still happen.
He IS NOT the biologocal father to any of the kids
DeleteAnd what does this have to do with the crime? Does it make it ok then? What exactly is your point?!
DeleteHe adopted the children - AS INFANTS as I understand, and for all intents and purposes they consider him their father. FATHERHOOD isn't all about the blood, it's a role of responsibility and love. This crime and these charges show neither.
Hi Debbie,
ReplyDeleteI tried to text you but it didn't go through. I wanted to tell you something buy didn't want it to post. Do you have a new number?
Thanks
I have no idea who this is but if you know me then you have my cell number and my emails... nothing has changed.
